Who is Willian?

Willian Borges da Silva, known as Willian, is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a winger for the Premier League club Arsenal. Brazil international was born on 9 August 1988 in Ribeirao Pires.

Willian started his senior career at Corinthians before joining Shakhtar Donetsk in summer 2007 for a fee of €14m.

In his six years with the Miners, the Brazilian winger won honours, including four Ukrainian Premier League trophies and the UEFA Cup in 2009.

In 2013, Willian briefly signed for Anzhi before joining Chelsea for £30m, winning the Premier League and League Cup in his second campaign in England.

In summer 2020, the Brazilian forward signed for Arsenal on a three-year deal. On 12 September, the 32-year-old forward played his debut game for Arsenal with Fulham, recording two assists, as the Gunners won 3–0.

In winter 2021, the Brazilian forward registered an assist in a 3–1 victory over Leicester in the Premier League, which was his first goal/assist contribution for the Gunners since November 2020.

On 9 May 2021, the Brazilian attacker scored his first goal for the Gunners in a 3–1 home league victory over West Bromwich Albion.

What is Willian’s international career like?

As a member of the U20 Brazil side, Borges made his debut in the 2007 South American Youth Championship with Chile in winter 2007, in which Brazil went on to victory.

In 2007, Willian was also selected for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, but Spain eliminated Brazil in the quarter-finals.

On 10 November 2011, Borges made his senior debut for Brazil in a friendly game with Gabon. On 16 November 2013, Willian scored his first international goal in a 5–0 victory over Honduras in Miami, Florida.

On 7 May 2014, Borges was selected as part of the 23-man team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Willian came on at half-time in extra time of the round of 16 game with Chile in Belo Horizonte for Oscar and took a penalty in the shootout, which the winger put wide of the goal.

At the 2015 Copa América, Borges assisted Roberto Firmino’s decisive goal in the 2–1 victory over Venezuela in Santiago. On 5 May 2016, Willian was named by Brazil coach Dunga among the 23-man squad for the Copa América.

In May 2018, Borges was named in Tite’s final 23-man squad for Russia’s 2018 FIFA World Cup. In summer 2019, Willian received a late call-up for the 2019 Copa América to replace the injured Neymar.
