Who is Bernd Leno?
Bernd Leno is a German shot-stopper who plays for the Premier League giants Arsenal. Germany international was born on 4 March 1992. In May 2011, Bernd extended his deal with Stuttgart until summer 2014.
In summer 2011, Leno was loaned out to Bayer Leverkusen until December 2011. Four days after the five-month loan agreement was signed, the German shot-stopper played his debut game in Bundesliga against Werder Bremen.
After Dirk Krüssenberg and Heribert Macherey, Leno became the third shot-stopper in Bundesliga history to keep a clean sheet in his first three matches.
When Bernd played on 13 September 2011, at the age of just 19 years and 193 days, with Chelsea in the 2011–12 UEFA Champions League group stage, Leno became the youngest German shot-stopper ever to play in the UEFA Champions League game.
The transfer was made permanent on 30 November 2011, when Bernd received a deal that kept him with Bayer Leverkusen until 2017.
The German shot-stopper became a regular in the first team, and after a string of fantastic displays, on 8 November 2013, Leno signed an improved deal to keep him at BayArena until 2018.
Bernd played his 300th competitive game for Bayer Leverkusen on 14 April 2018 in a 4–1 league victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.
In summer 2018, the Gunners announced that the German goalkeeper had signed a five-year deal for £22.5m while pending ‘the completion of regulatory processes’.
Bernd played his debut match for Arsenal in the 4–2 win against Vorskla Poltava in the UEFA Europa League.
The German goalkeeper played his debut Premier League game in the 2–0 win against Watford at the Emirates Stadium, replacing regular shot-stopper Petr Čech, who picked up an injury in the first half.
Bernd was the runner up of the Gunners Player of the Season award in the 2019–20 campaign, commanding 16% of the final vote. In winter 2021, Leno played his 100th game for the London club in all tournaments in a 3–2 victory over Benfica in the UEFA Europa League round of 32.
What is Bernd Leno’s international career like?
Bernd received his first call up to the senior Germany team in October 2015 for UEFA Euro 2016 qualifiers with the Republic of Ireland and Georgia.
The 29-year-old shot-stopper was later included in Germany’s squad for the final competition the following summer.
Bernd was selected for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. Leno played one match of the competition with Australia.
Bernd was named in Germany’s provisional squad for the 2018 Mundial but was not selected for the final 23-man team. On 19 May 2021, the German goalkeeper was selected to the team for the UEFA Euro 2020.
